NSMA is looking to fill the following position:
CONSERVATION PLANNER
The North Slave Métis Alliance (NSMA) is an Indigenous organization that represents section 35 Aboriginal rights-bearing indigenous Métis people of the Great Slave Lake area who primarily reside in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories (NWT). NSMA’s mandate includes, amongst other things, the protection and respect of our members’ Aboriginal rights and interests, by public and private actors, on NSMA member’s traditional lands
Position:
Title: Conservation Planner
Term: Permanent – Full-Time
Location: Yellowknife, NT
Start Date: July 5, 2021
Salary: Commensurate with Qualifications
Purpose of the Position:
The Conservation Planner is responsible for monitoring and participating in conservation land planning, environmental monitoring and management and implementation of land use strategies for the NWT. The Conservation Planner also works collaboratively and in partnership with other NWT Aboriginal groups, Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and Government of Canada representatives in the development of environmental management plans and policies respecting NWT flora and fauna.
Responsibilities:
• establish links with representatives from private and public sector organizations who are mandated to promote and implement land-use planning tools
• collaborate with public and private organizations in the preparation of NWT regional environmental plans for the conservation of the environment including flora and fauna
• identify environmental concerns, advocate for environmental stewardship and promote land use conservation
• undertake environmental field work, research, and monitoring
• keep current on NSMA environmental correspondence, briefing notes, reports, field surveys and latest environmental policy changes and requirements
• oversee and engage with NSMA members respecting excursions such as visiting operating mines, contaminated mine sites, traditional use sites
• exercise diplomacy when representing the NSMA in public and private forums
• develop and submit funding proposals for conservation projects
• manage project funding for ongoing projects
Education:
• a bachelor of science degree in environmental science, biology, chemistry, environmental engineering, environmental science, geography or political science
• an informed understanding of Aboriginal rights in Canada as well as established and ongoing land claim negotiations in the NWT
• an informed understanding of the Environmental Regulatory Statutes of the NWT
Skills and Abilities:
• familiarity and ability to use Geographic Information System (GIS)
• exceptional communication skills (oral and written)
• ability to undertake public and private forum presentations
• an informed understanding of the history and contemporary challenges of Indigenous Peoples in Canada and particularly the NWT
• ability to comprehend and critically analyze environmental documents
• advanced MS Office skills
• physically fit enough to undertake mine site and traditional on-the-land activities
• ability to fly in small aircraft and helicopters
• Class 5 Driver’s Licence
Reporting:
• the Conservation Planner reports to the Environment Manager
