OUTLINE & SCOPE OF POSITION:
Under direction of the Tłıc̨hǫ Executive Officer, the Director of Early Childhood is responsible and accountable for the management, coordination and support of programs related to the implementation of Early Years: Early Childhood Strategy and Framework for guiding the Tłıc̨hǫ communities’ youngest citizens. The Director achieves this by collaborating with employees, Tłıc̨hǫ Community Services Agency, Government of the Northwest Territories, Government of Canada, contractors and researchers; The Director is responsible for drafting legislation and policy; advocating for the importance of years; providing public awareness, communicating with parents, community members, and elders; providing leadership to department employees; evaluating programs; making recommendations for changes; and representing the department.
EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS REQUIRED:
• A university degree in early childhood education, and 5 years of related work experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience
• Knowledge of, and experience with traditional Tłıc̨hǫ child rearing practices, Tłıc̨hǫ language, culture & way of life
• Familiarity with current early childhood practices relating to daycares, family resource programs and TCSA/GNWT school programs up to grade 3
• Knowledge of the Tłıc̨hǫ Agreement, Tłıc̨hǫ Implementation Plan, Early Childhood Framework and Strategies, and Tłıc̨hǫ Intergovernmental Services Agreement
• Strong interpersonal, communication, time management and teamwork skills
• Able to work in stressful situations, employ conceptual thinking and effectively solve problems
