Job Description

The Inuit Heritage Trust Incorporated (IHTI), established by Nunavut Tunngavik Incorporated to implement Articles 33 and 34 of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, is seeking to fill the following position, based in Iqaluit, Nunavut.


Reporting to the Director of Projects, the Archaeologist is responsible for the ongoing management of IHT archaeology projects. Core responsibilities are design and deliver archaeology outreach and education programming across Nunavut, support Nunavut communities and other Government of Nunavut and Inuit organizations in their needs for archaeological expertise, work with the archaeology collection of Nunavut, support the IHT in its efforts to further decolonize archaeology in Nunavut.

The position requires a Masters, preferably Ph.D in Archaeology, with work experience in Inuit Nunangat. The incumbent is expected to have strong interpersonal and logistical management skills, preferably experience working with elders, youths and young adults as well as budgeting and administration skills.

A high degree of cross-cultural sensitivity is essential for the position.

Willingness to travel to remote communities and to potentially conduct, organize or participate several weeks per year in archaeological field work in remote field camps is essential.

Furthermore, the position requires familiarity with the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement and archaeological resources of Nunavut as it pertains to the Trust’s activities.

The Archaeologist will be self-motivated, able to work independently with limited supervision with a strong interest in educational outreach, Inuit culture and arctic archaeology.

Fluency in Inuktut will be an asset.
