Job Description
CALL FOR TRIBUNAL MEMBERS ON THE NUNAVUT HUMAN RIGHTS TRIBUNAL
The Minister of Justice has an immediate opening on the Nunavut Human Rights Tribunal.
Tribunal members are adjudicators who interpret and apply the Human Rights Act and related case law to ensure all Nunavummiut have equal opportunity to enjoy a full life free from discrimination. Tribunal members screen human rights applications, participate in dispute resolution processes including mediation, and conduct hearings to decide on discrimination claims before the Tribunal. Members must be able to perform these duties in a fair, accessible and timely manner. Members may be assigned to carry out their adjudicative responsibilities alone or as part of a panel.
• The Tribunal is specifically seeking applications from members of the legal or adjudicative justice community including individuals with familiarity of law, policy and/or administrative law procedure.
• Tribunal members should be respected individuals from diverse communities with a demonstrated interest in, and a sensitivity to, human rights as well as Inuit culture and values.
• Oral and written fluency in either Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English or French is essential as membership requires writing decisions.
Training is provided however previous experience is strongly encouraged. Members should be available for at least 10 hours per month to deal with matters that come before the Tribunal, prepare for and attend monthly Tribunal meetings, travel to annual meetings and conduct hearings within the Territory. Members of the Tribunal will be paid honoraria for the days their services are required, and any travel costs incurred.
