CALL FOR TRIBUNAL MEMBERS ON THE NUNAVUT HUMAN RIGHTS TRIBUNAL
The Minister of Justice has an immediate opening on the Nunavut Human Rights Tribunal.
This Tribunal, established under the Human Rights Act, ensures all people of Nunavut have equal opportunity to enjoy a full and life without discrimination.
As a Tribunal member, you will be required to adjudicate—which means to “judge” or “decide” on matters that come before the Tribunal. Having an adjudicative role also means decisions must be made by following legal rules and principles.
Tribunal members should be individuals who are respected members of the community and should have a demonstrated interest in, and a sensitivity to, human rights and to Inuit culture and values. Oral and written fluency in either Inuktitut, Inuinnaqtun, English or French is essential as membership requires writing decisions. You will also be expected to attend a minimum of one annual meeting, six regular monthly meetings, and preside at mediations and hearings that come before the Tribunal.
Members should be available for at least 10 hours per month to deal with matters that come before the Tribunal, travel to annual meetings and attend hearings within the Territory. Training will be provided. Members of the Tribunal will be paid honoraria for the days their services are required and any travel costs incurred.
