Full-Time Deputy Languages Commissioner
Job Description
As the Deputy Language Commissioner, you work collaboratively with GNWT departments to ensure the rights, status and privileges of each of NWT 11 official languages are respected and protected. This position is located in Hay River, NT, but remote work may be considered for applicants living in NWT communities on a case-by-case basis.
Key Knowledge, Skills and Abilities are, but not limited to;
• Knowledge of colonial history including the loss of Indigenous languages and the intergenerational trauma caused by residential schools.
• Knowledge of the many dialects and linguistic variations of Indigenous Languages within the NWT.
• Knowledge of the Official Languages Act and the ability to apply and interpret legislation.
• Ability to deliver training and presentations to large and small groups with diverse interests and needs, and to manage group dynamics.
Typically attained by a degree in Social Sciences, Indigenous Studies or related field combined with 2years of experience that includes interpreting and applying legislation and communicating about legal or technical issues in plain language, and conflict resolution and/or a frontline public service, customer service, complaints resolution or similar role interacting with the general public.
Equivalencies may include 10 years experience interpreting and applying legislation and communicating about legal or technical issues in plain language; and 2 years of experience in conflict resolution and/or frontline public service, customer service, complaints resolution or similar role interacting with the general public.

Salary: $127,237.50 to $152,002.50 plus an annual
Northern Allowance of $5,662. As well as a defined pension plan, health/dental benefits
