Senior Management Career Opportunity
The Director of Protective Services/Fire Chief reports to the Senior Administrative Officer and is a member of the Town’s Senior Management team. The Director is responsible for the overall administration of the Hay River Volunteer Fire Department, the planning, organizing and directing of emergency planning/services and the monitoring and enforcement of bylaws. As well, the Director oversees the Town of Hay River’s safety program and the Emergency Response Plan.
The Director is responsible for directing all volunteer firefighters and Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs) and ensuring that firefighters and EMRs have adequate training. The Director is also responsible for ensuring that firefighting and emergency response equipment is monitored on a regular basis and is in good working order. The incumbent will develop all policies and procedures concerning firefighting and emergency response in accordance with the municipal bylaw, federal and territorial legislation and policies and in accordance with the Office of the Fire Marshal.
Qualification:
The Director of Protective Services/Fire Chief would normally attain the required knowledge, skills, and attitudes through completion of a two to three year technical or community college certificate or diploma in Fire and Emergency Service training and Emergency Management training, as well as the training outlined below, combined with several years of related firefighting, rescue and ambulance experience accompanied with supervisory experience in emergency and command and control situations. Equivalences will be considered.

• NFPA 1041 Level 1 Fire Service Instructor
• EMR
• Air Endorsed Class 3 driver’s license
